Just to let you know, the screen-space path tracing in the Nostalgia Shader is meant to be a free alternative to what you get with NostalgiaVX, so don't expect full blown path tracing in this version of the shaderpack any time soon.Lighting, realistic shadows, slight blurring, and other visual improvements - all this became available thanks to the use of shaders. If you're looking for a fully path traced variant of the Nostalgia Shader that can calculate the entirety of your Minecraft world (which adds to the accuracy) as supposed to only what's visible on the frame, then feel free to check out NostalgiaVX because it may just have what you're looking for! So, we've found out that limiting the path tracer to only calculate what is on-screen is significantly less expensive to render, and it gives us results that are close enough for a reasonable performance. Because of the utter complexity of path tracing, this is very demanding for most computers, and doing this in real-time is especially a problem when the game would have to run at a framerate that is at the very least playable (anything from 30fps and onwards). For an accurate result, the path tracer would have to be able to cast multiple rays (coming from the camera) that bounce across the entire scene at random directions, get the sufficient information, and head right back towards the camera in order to generate the final image. It provides global illumination, accurate shadows, and better ambient occlusion, although because of its screen-space nature, it can only calculate what is on-screen, which can hinder the accuracy of the algorithm. Version 4.0 has screen-space path tracing, which should hopefully get the job done.
